Swell Shark

Cephaloscyllium Sharks should only be added to very large aquariums with a fine sand bed preferably zoos or public aquariums. Swell Sharks will grow quite large careful thought and consideration will need to be done before adding to home aquariums. Rockwork with plenty of caves, cracks and crevices should be provided for resting. Sharks lack airbladders instead they have two lobed liver that maintains their buoyancy. Sharks have a keen sense of smell and eyesight as well as renewable teeth. The are sensitive to both electric impulses and copper maintain aquarium with neither present. Sharks require a diet rich in meaty based foods. Swell Sharks have the ability to swallow air or water swelling themselves to make it difficult to pull out of their hiding space. If in open water they will bite their tail forming a U shape and swelling up making it difficult for predators to grab them.

Swell Sharks are also sometimes known as the Puffer Shark. Not often seen in the aquarium trade. Swell Sharks are generally a mix of yellow to brown with brown and white spots, juveniles may appear slightly lighter in color. Swell Sharks can grow to almost 43".

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 500 gallons or larger for this species.
