Moonfish Lookdown

(Selene orstedii)

Provide a very large aquarium with an abundance of open swim rooom. They grow very large and will out grow most home aquariums very quickly. Careful consideration should be taken before adding to most home aquariums. Mexican Trevally also require a sandy bottom with plenty of live meaty food items available such as crustaceans, crabs, clams and even small benthic fish. Juveniles are generally found in small groups but as they mature will begin to live singly. Marked color differences are seen between juveniles and adults. Trevally are very hardy peaceful fish but are not considered reef safe and must be fed at least once daily.

Moonfish Lookdown are also sometimes known as the Orsted's or Mexican Moonfish. They are occasionally seen in the aquarium trade. The Moonfish Lookdown have a circular flattened silver colored body with yellow fins. The Moonfish Lookdown can grow up to 10 inches in length.

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 125 gallons or larger for this species.
