Oriental Flying Gurnard

(Dactyloptena orientalis)

Dactyloptena Gurnards should be added to an aquarium with limited rockwork as it may damage its large pectoral fins. They are small, bottom dwelling fish requiring large open areas with plenty of sand and rubble as they may try to bury themselves in the sand if threatenedd. Low water currents should be provided for the slow moving fish. Gurnards are venomous having poisonous spines. Take care when placing hands in the aquarium. Gurnards are shy, easily picked on by larger more aggressive fish, peaceful tankmates are required. House only one Gurnard per aquarium unless a mated pair. Gurnards feed mainly at night on small fish, crabs and shrimp. Most Gurnards require live enriched adult Brine, Grass/Glass Shrimp or Black Worms. They can be trained to accept meaty foods offered on a stick over time.

Oriental Flying Gurnard are also sometimes known as the Purple Flying Gurnard. Not often seen in the aquarium trade. Oriental Flying Gurnard are generally a cream color with some brown spots. The Oriental Flying Gurnard can grow to almost 15".
