Maroon Clownfish, Mismarked

(Amphiprion biaculeatus)

Premnas Clownfish should be added to a well-established marine aquarium with stable parameters, ample rockwork, and open swimming space. Also known as anemonefish, they are hardy and reef safe but are considered more territorial than many other clownfish species. They may form a symbiotic relationship with host anemones, gaining protection among the tentacles while providing food scraps and cleaning in return. Extra caution should be taken when housing with other fish, as Maroon Clownfish are known for their bold personality and strong territorial instincts, especially when defending a host or breeding site. Females are significantly larger than males, and like all clownfish, they are protandrous hermaphrodites—juveniles first mature as males, with the dominant individual transitioning to female when necessary. They are best kept singly or as a bonded pair, as aggression can occur toward other clownfish species or conspecifics in smaller aquariums. The Mismarked Maroon Clownfish features the deep maroon to rich red body coloration characteristic of the species but displays irregular, incomplete, or uniquely shaped white striping. These one-of-a-kind pattern variations make each specimen visually distinct and highly sought after by collectors. Adults can grow to nearly 6 inches in length, making them one of the largest clownfish species commonly available. A varied diet of high-quality meaty and herbivore-based marine foods should be provided. Offer frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, quality marine pellets, and algae-based preparations to promote optimal health, coloration, and long-term vitality. We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species.
