Madagascar Clownfish

(Amphiprion latifasciatus)

Amphiprion Clowns should be added to a well-established marine aquarium with stable parameters, ample rockwork, and open swimming space. Also known as anemonefish, they are hardy, reef safe, and relatively easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Like other clownfish species, they may form a symbiotic relationship with host anemones, gaining protection among the tentacles while providing food scraps and cleaning in return. They may become territorial, particularly when defending their chosen host or breeding site. Females are larger than males, and like all clownfish, Madagascar Clownfish are protandrous hermaphrodites—juveniles first mature as males, with the dominant individual transitioning to female if needed. They can be kept singly, as a bonded pair, or in carefully managed groups in larger systems. Madagascar Clownfish are striking in appearance, featuring a rich orange to reddish-orange body accented by two broad white vertical band edged in black across the mid-body and another behind the eye. Adults can grow to nearly 5 inches in length, making them one of the larger clownfish species. A varied diet of high-quality meaty and herbivore-based marine foods should be provided. Offer frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, high-quality pellets, and algae-based preparations to ensure balanced nutrition and vibrant coloration. We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species.
