Truncate Cardinalfish
(Cheilodipterus singapurensis)
Cheilodipterus Cardinalfish should be added to well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters and ample open swimming space. Provide abundant live rock with caves, crevices, and ledges to create secure hiding areas and natural shelter. These structures allow the fish to retreat during daylight hours and feel secure within the aquarium environment. Most Cheilodipterus Cardinalfish are peaceful schooling species, though individual temperament can vary—careful research should be conducted before mixing with similar species. The Truncate Cardinalfish is generally peaceful but should not be housed with very small fish, ornamental shrimp, or feather dusters, as they may be viewed as prey. They are slow, methodical swimmers and should be kept with other peaceful, moderately sized tank mates. A varied diet of enriched meaty foods should be provided to maintain optimal health and coloration. Offer high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped marine meats, and other protein-rich preparations. Feeding once or twice daily in appropriate portions will help ensure proper nutrition. Most Cheilodipterus Cardinalfish are nocturnal, becoming more active during the evening while resting quietly among rockwork throughout the day. Some species within this group are paternal mouth brooders, so researching species-specific reproductive behavior is recommended if breeding occurs. The Truncate Cardinalfish, sometimes referred to as the Five Lined Cardinalfish or Tooth Cardinalfish, is occasionally seen in the aquarium trade. It features bold black horizontal stripes. A distinctive black spot edged with yellow is present on the caudal peduncle, adding to its striking appearance. Adults can grow to nearly 5 inches in length.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species.
