Brazilian Gramma Basslet
(Gramma brasiliensis)
Gramma brasiliensis should be added to well established aquariums with plenty of rockwork, caves, and crevices where they can establish a territory and retreat when needed. This species is generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially toward similar fish or other basslets. Provide a varied diet of meaty enriched foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality prepared foods. Feed small amounts multiple times per day while avoiding overfeeding. Avoid adding much larger or aggressive tankmates, as this species may be easily harassed. Gramma brasiliensis have also been observed occasionally picking parasites from other fish. Like other grammas, they may jump, so a tight-fitting lid is recommended. The Brazilian Gramma Basslet is sometimes referred to as the Brazilian Royal Gramma and is less common in the aquarium trade than its Caribbean relatives. This attractive species displays a smooth gradient coloration from deep violet or purple at the head to yellow or golden coloration toward the tail. Adults typically reach about 2–3 inches in length. We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for long term success, though some sources note they can be kept in slightly smaller aquariums with proper aquascape and husbandry.
