Fancy Brittle Sea Star

(Ophiure protoreaster)

Ophiure Sea Stars are primarily marine animals found in oceans around the world, from shallow coastal waters to deep-sea environments. They are often found on the ocean floor, burrowed in sediment, or hiding among rocks and corals. They are primarily scavengers and detritivores, feeding on organic matter and small particles they find in the water and on the ocean floor. They use their arms to capture and manipulate food particles and convey them to the central mouth located on the underside of the central disc. It's essential to avoid using copper-based treatments in a tank with invertebrates, as it can harm them. Always follow the recommended guidelines for medication use in marine aquariums.

Ophiure protoreaster are also sometimes known as Fancy Brittle Sea Stars. They are not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. Ophiure protoreaster are typically brown to green and may have darker visible patterns. Their legs may have light or dark brown bands. They can grow up to 10".
