Chiseltooth Wrasse

(Pseudodax moluccanus)

Pseudodax Wrasse should be added to a well established aquarium with plenty of swimroom. Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices for hiding. A deep sandy bottom should also be provided as Pseudodax Wrasse are burrowers, they bury themselves in the sand at night and if they are frightened. Rock and rubble should also be abundantly availalble as they will turn them over looking for prey. Pseudodax Wrasse should be housed with tank mates that are not easily harassed. Pseudodax are not reef safe and will prey on benthic invertebrates. Feed a diet of meaty foods multiple times daily. Wrasse are hermaphrodites meaning they start as juveniles/females but at some point in their life may turn into a male. Provide an aquarium with a tight fitting lid as they may jump. Should be housed singly as they may become aggressive towards other fish of the same species.

The Chiseltooth Wrasse are also sometimes known as the Moluca's Wrasse. Rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Coloration may vary depending on maturity. Juveniles are generally black with horizontal blue stripes while adults are usually green to red bodies with red trimmed scales, a white stripe on its caudal peduncle and a blue tail. Chiseltooth Wrasse can grow to almost 12".

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 100 gallons or larger for this species.
