Frostfin Cardinalfish

(Ostorhinchus hoevenii)

Ostorhinchus Cardinalfish should be added to well-established marine aquariums with stable parameters and adequate open swimming space. Ample live rock structures with caves, overhangs, and shaded ledges should be provided to create secure resting areas and natural shelter. These environments help reduce stress and allow the fish to display natural behaviors. Most Ostorhinchus Cardinalfish are peaceful, schooling species; however, careful research should always be conducted before mixing species, as temperaments can vary. Frostfin Cardinalfish is a slow, methodical swimmer and should be housed with other calm, non-aggressive tank mates. Like many cardinalfish, they are primarily nocturnal—becoming more active at dusk while resting quietly among rockwork during the day. A varied diet of enriched meaty foods should be offered to maintain optimal health and coloration. Provide high-quality frozen or prepared foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and other protein-rich marine preparations. Feeding small portions multiple times daily can help ensure consistent nutrition. Some cardinalfish species are mouth brooders, with males carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths until hatching. Researching species-specific breeding behaviors will help ensure proper care if spawning occurs. Also sometimes known as Eyed Cardinalfish, or Split Banded Cardinalfish, this attractive species is not often seen in the aquarium trade. While capable of reaching nearly 5 inches in length, most specimens are more commonly just over 3 inches.

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species.
