Yellow Tail Cardinalfish
(Apogon sp.)
Apogon Cardinalfish should be added to well-established marine aquariums with stable parameters and adequate open swimming space. Provide plenty of live rock with caves, overhangs, and shaded ledges to create secure hiding areas and natural shelter. These structures help reduce stress and allow the fish to exhibit its natural hovering and retreating behavior. Most Apogon Cardinalfish are peaceful schooling species, though individual temperaments can vary—careful research should always be done before mixing species. The Yellowtail Cardinalfish is a slow, methodical swimmer and is best housed with other calm, non-aggressive tank mates. Like many cardinalfish, it is primarily nocturnal, becoming more active during the evening hours while resting quietly among rockwork during the day. A varied diet of enriched meaty foods should be provided to maintain vibrant coloration and overall health. Offer high-quality frozen preparations such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped marine meats, enriched brine shrimp, and other protein-rich foods. Feeding small portions once or twice daily will help ensure proper nutrition and consistent body condition. Some Apogon species are paternal mouth brooders, with males carrying fertilized eggs in their mouths until hatching. Researching species-specific breeding behaviors will help ensure appropriate care if spawning occurs in the aquarium. The Yellowtail Cardinalfish are a pinkish orange with a distinct yellow tail. Adults typically reach up to approximately 3 inches in length, making them well suited for smaller reef or peaceful community aquariums.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species.
