Twospot Highfin Butterflyfish

(Coradion altivelis)

Coradion Butterflyfish should be added to large, well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters and ample open swimming space. Substantial live rock structures should be provided to create natural grazing surfaces, shaded retreats, and intricate crevices for exploration. Using its elongated snout, this species methodically probes cracks and holes within the rockwork in search of small invertebrates and hidden prey. Twospot Highfin Butterfly is not considered reef safe. It will readily pick at SPS, LPS, and soft corals, as well as tube worms, small crustaceans, and clam mantles. In captivity, a varied diet of meaty foods should be offered, including live or frozen fortified brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and black or red worms. If the fish is hesitant to feed initially, try pressing food into rock crevices or feeding stations to mimic its natural foraging behavior and encourage a feeding response. This species is generally peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates but can become territorial with members of its own genus. It is best kept singly or as a carefully matched male/female pair in larger systems to reduce aggression. Also sometimes known as the Highfin Coralfish, Tawneygirdled Butterflyfish, or Altivelis Butterflyfish, this striking species is seldom seen in the aquarium trade. It features a silver body accented by bold vertical brown bands trimmed in yellow. The dorsal and anal fins display subtle yellow highlights that draw attention to its elegant, high-fin profile. Adults can reach up to approximately 6 inches in length.

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 100 gallons or larger for this species.
