Patzner's Sailfin Blenny
(Salarias patzneri)
Patzner’s Sailfin Blennies should be added to well established aquariums with mature rock work for perching, hiding, and grazing. They can be somewhat aggressive and territorial toward their own kind or other algae grazing blennies if space is limited. Known for their strong appetite for microalgae, they will graze continuously throughout the day. If ample natural algae is not available, supplement with algae-based foods such as spirulina preparations, herbivore pellets, and marine algae sheets. Patzner’s Sailfin Blennies are typically found in rocky reef zones, lagoons, and rubble areas where algae growth is abundant. Like other members of this group, they may utilize small holes, empty barnacle shells, or tube structures as shelter. Most blennies lack or have very small swim bladders, so they will spend much of their time perched on rock surfaces. Be sure to provide an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid as blennies may jump. Patzner’s Sailfin Blenny is sometimes referred to as Patzner’s Algae Blenny and is less common in the aquarium trade compared to the standard Sailfin or Lawnmower Blenny. This attractive species typically displays mottled brown, tan, and cream coloration with subtle patterning that helps it blend into rock and algae covered surfaces. The dorsal fin is often tall and sail-like, especially when displayed. Patzner’s Sailfin Blennies typically grow to around 4–5 inches in length.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species, though larger aquariums with established algae growth will provide the best long-term success.
Water conditions: Salinity 1.020 – 1.025, Temp (F) 72 – 78, pH 8.1 – 8.4, Alkalinity 8 – 12 dKH.
