Floral Blenny
(Petroscirtes mitratus)
Floral Blennies should be added to well established aquariums with stable parameters and mature biofilm, microalgae, or natural film growth. Rock work, branching structures, and small crevices should be provided for perching, hiding, and grazing throughout the aquarium. Floral Blennies are generally considered moderately peaceful; however, like many fang blennies, they may display territorial behavior toward similar shaped fish or other blennies, especially in smaller aquariums or when shelter is limited. If sufficient natural grazing material is not present, supplement the diet with a mix of high-quality meaty foods such as finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and small marine pellets, along with occasional algae-based foods for dietary balance. Males tend to be slightly larger than females and may show subtle differences in coloration or display behavior during breeding or territorial interactions. Most blennies lack or have very small swim bladders, so they spend much of their time perched on rock surfaces, shells, coral branches, or within small holes, moving in short darting motions between shelter areas. Be sure to provide an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid, as blennies may jump when startled. The Floral Blenny is occasionally available in the aquarium trade and is appreciated for its bold personality and unique fang blenny appearance. This species typically displays a light tan to beige base coloration with darker mottling, faint banding, or subtle facial markings depending on mood and environment. The head is somewhat elongated with a characteristic fang blenny profile. Fins are generally translucent to lightly patterned. Like other fang blennies, this species possesses enlarged canine teeth used primarily for defense. Floral Blennies typically grows to around 3–4 inches in length.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for this species, especially in reef or fish-only aquariums with ample rockwork, hiding spaces, and established microfauna.
