Lizard Blenny

(Parapercis sp.)

Lizard Blennies, also known as Lizardfish Blennies or sandperch-type blennies depending on species, should be added to well established aquariums with plenty of open swim room and sandy areas. Rock work should be provided for perching, hiding, and ambush hunting. They are hardy, active fish and can be somewhat aggressive and territorial toward smaller, less aggressive tank mates. Provide a diet rich in meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, and other marine-based frozen foods. Lizard Blennies may prey on very small fish or crustaceans if given the opportunity. Most blennies and sandperch-type species lack or have very small swim bladders, so they will spend much of their time resting on rock or sand surfaces. Be sure to provide an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid as these fish may jump. The Lizard Blenny is occasionally referred to as a Lizard Sandperch and is not commonly seen in the aquarium trade. This interesting species typically displays mottled tan, brown, or sandy coloration that provides excellent camouflage against substrate and rockwork. Many individuals show banding, speckling, or irregular patterning designed to mimic sand and rubble environments. Lizard Blennies typically grow to around 4–5 inches in length depending on species.

We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 40 gallons or larger for this species due to their active nature and territorial tendencies.
