Chestnut Eyelash Blenny

(Cirripectes castaneus)

Chestnut Eyelash Blennies should be added to well established aquariums with stable parameters and mature algal growth. Rock work should be provided for perching, hiding, and grazing throughout the day. Chestnut Eyelash Blennies are generally considered peaceful; however, they may occasionally pick at very small benthic organisms or compete with other algae grazers if food is limited. Provide a balanced diet consisting primarily of algae-based foods such as spirulina, marine algae sheets, and herbivore preparations, supplemented with small amounts of meaty foods for optimal health. This species should be housed with peaceful tankmates that allow the blenny to graze without constant competition or aggression. Males may be slightly larger and can display more intense coloration than females. Like other members of this group, they may display subtle color changes during breeding or social interactions. Most blennies lack or have very small swim bladders, so they will spend most of their time resting on rock surfaces. Be sure to provide an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid as blennies may jump. The Chestnut Eyelash Blenny is sometimes referred to as a Chestnut Combtooth Blenny and is less commonly seen in the aquarium trade compared to some other combtooth blenny species. This attractive species typically displays warm chestnut to reddish-brown body coloration with fine patterning and characteristic “eyelash” cirri above the eyes. Fins often show subtle reddish or amber tones depending on mood and environment. Chestnut Eyelash Blennies typically grow to around 4–5 inches in length. We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 40 gallons or larger for long term success, especially in mixed reef aquariums with active tankmates. Water conditions: Salinity 1.020 – 1.025, Temp (F) 72 – 78, pH 8.1 – 8.4, Alkalinity 8 – 12 dKH.
