Twinspot Bass Basslet

(Serranus flaviventris)

Serranus Basslets should be added to well established aquariums with plenty of rockwork, caves, and overhangs where they can establish a territory and feel secure. This species is generally semi-peaceful but can become territorial toward similar shaped fish, other small basses, or conspecifics if space is limited. Provide a varied diet of meaty enriched foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared frozen or pellet foods. Feed small amounts multiple times per day while avoiding overfeeding. Avoid adding much larger or aggressive tankmates, as this species may be easily harassed. Twinspot Basslet are active hunters of small crustaceans and will spend much of their time searching rockwork for food. Like many small reef basses, they may jump, so a tight-fitting lid is recommended. The Twinspot Basslet is occasionally referred to as the Yellowbelly Serranus and is uncommon in the aquarium trade. This attractive species typically displays a pale to light tan or pinkish body with subtle striping or patterning and distinctive spots giving this fish its name. Adults typically reach about 3–4 inches in length. We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 30 gallons or larger for long term success, though larger aquariums are preferred when housing with other active reef fish or multiple territories.
