Atlantic Oyster Blenny, QM Labs
(Hypleurochilus pseudoaequipinnis)
Oyster Blennies should be added to well established aquariums with stable parameters and mature biofilm, microalgae, or natural film growth. Rock work should be provided for perching, hiding, and grazing throughout the aquarium. Oyster Blennies are generally considered easy to care for and peaceful; however, they can become territorial toward other fish with a similar body shape or other blennies, especially in smaller aquariums or when space is limited. If sufficient natural grazing material is not present, supplement the diet with a mix of algae-based foods such as spirulina preparations, marine algae sheets, and herbivore pellets, along with small meaty foods like finely chopped mysis shrimp, copepods, or enriched brine shrimp for complete nutrition. Males tend to be slightly larger than females and may show subtle differences in coloration or display behavior during breeding or territorial interactions. Most blennies lack or have very small swim bladders, so they spend much of their time perched on rock surfaces, shells, or substrate, moving in short hopping motions between grazing areas. Be sure to provide an aquarium with a tight-fitting lid, as blennies may jump when startled. The Oyster Blenny is occasionally available in the aquarium trade and is appreciated for its natural camouflage coloration and active, alert personality. This species typically displays a tan to light brown base coloration with darker mottling, spotting, or faint vertical banding that helps it blend naturally into rockwork, rubble zones, and algae-covered surfaces. The face may show subtle striping or spotting along with small cirri typical of many combtooth-type blennies. Fins are generally translucent to lightly patterned depending on mood and environment. Oyster Blennies typically grow to around 2.5–3.5 inches in length.
We recommend a minimum aquarium size of 20–30 gallons or larger for this species, especially in reef aquariums with adequate rockwork, hiding spaces, and natural grazing surfaces.
