Yellowbanded Pipefish

The Yellowbanded Pipefish is a beautiful and delicate marine fish recognized by its slender body, vivid yellow bands, and contrasting dark coloration. Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, it is commonly associated with reef crevices, caves, and areas with abundant small crustaceans, where it uses its elongated snout to pick tiny prey from the rockwork. A 30-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for a pair, although larger, mature aquariums are preferable. Provide plenty of live rock, caves, macroalgae, and calm areas with gentle water movement, along with excellent filtration and highly stable water quality. The Yellowbanded Pipefish is peaceful and reef-safe, but it should not be housed with aggressive or highly competitive feeders that may prevent it from getting enough food. It is best kept with peaceful tank mates and, when possible, with a compatible mate. As a specialized planktivore, it can be challenging to feed and does best on a continuous supply of copepods, amphipods, enriched baby brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other appropriately sized zooplankton. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are often necessary, and a mature refugium or established live-rock system can provide valuable natural prey. With careful acclimation, abundant natural food, and a peaceful environment, the Yellowbanded Pipefish can be a rewarding addition to an experienced aquarist's mature reef aquarium.
