The Clown Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) are an extremely vibrant species of invertebrate that is bound to wow just about everyone. They received the name "mantis" because they resemble the Praying Mantis insect and also like the insect, they have very quick strikes. The Mantis Shrimp is known for having colorful and complex eyes.

The Mantis Shrimp are split into two categories; "spears" or "smashing", which refers to they type of claws they have. The Clown Mantis has "smashing" claws that are extremely strong and quick. In the wild, these claws are used to break open the shells of their prey such as crustaceans and bivalves. However, smashing mantis shrimp have been known to crack aquarium glass, so caution should be used when housing.

The Clown Mantis Shrimp are very aggressive and should not be housed with other mantis shrimp or invertebrates. A sandy substrate and rockwork should be provided so the Clown mantis can create their own cave. For continued health, provide a varied diet of meaty frozen or live foods.
