Male Reticulate Boxfish

The male Reticulate Boxfish is a striking marine fish known for its rigid box-shaped body and intricate blue, yellow, and green reticulated pattern that becomes especially vibrant in mature males. Native to Indo-Pacific coral reefs, this peaceful and intelligent species spends much of its time slowly exploring rocky habitats while searching for small invertebrates and algae. A 75-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended, with plenty of open swimming space, live rock, caves, and stable reef conditions. Maintain temperatures of 74–80°F, a pH of 8.1–8.4, and salinity between 1.023–1.026. The Male Reticulate Boxfish is generally peaceful and can be housed with other calm community fish, but it should be protected from aggressive tank mates that may cause stress. It is considered reef-safe with caution, as it may nip at some sessile invertebrates and should not be kept with very small ornamental crustaceans. As an omnivore, it benefits from a varied diet of high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped seafood, algae-based foods, and sponge-containing preparations. Like other boxfish, it can release toxins when severely stressed or dying, so excellent water quality, careful acclimation, and a peaceful environment are essential. With proper care, the male Reticulate Boxfish can live 5–10 years, becoming a unique and interactive centerpiece in a well-maintained marine aquarium.
