The Honeycomb Eel Gymnothorax is a large, predatory saltwater eel that requires a spacious, escape-proof marine aquarium with plenty of caves, rockwork, and hiding spots to mimic its natural reef habitat. This species can grow over 6 feet long, so advanced planning for a very large tank and powerful filtration is essential. Honeycomb Morays are carnivores and should be fed a varied diet of meaty marine foods such as shrimp, squid, silversides, and fish fillets several times per week using feeding tongs. While generally shy during the day, they can become territorial and may eat smaller fish or crustaceans, so tank mates should be large and robust. Stable saltwater conditions, excellent water quality, and tightly secured lids are critical because moray eels are skilled escape artists. Despite their intimidating appearance, they often become interactive with experienced keepers once acclimated.
