Gray Freckled Dogface Pufferfish
The Gray Freckled Dogface Pufferfish (Arothron nigropunctatus) is a hardy and intelligent marine fish recognized for its expressive “dog-like” face, mottled gray freckled patterning, and curious personality. Native to Indo-Pacific reef environments, this species thrives in large, stable marine aquariums of at least 125–180 gallons with excellent filtration, strong oxygenation, and plenty of open swimming space combined with caves for shelter. Ideal conditions include temperatures of 74–80°F, pH 8.1–8.4, and consistently low nitrate levels. As a carnivorous species with continuously growing teeth, it requires a varied diet of hard-shelled foods such as clams, mussels, shrimp, crabs, snails, and other meaty marine items to help naturally wear down its teeth and maintain dental health. While generally peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates, it is not reef safe and may consume invertebrates or small fish, so it is best housed with robust community species in a predator-safe setup. With proper care, enrichment, and diet variety, the Gray Freckled Dogface Pufferfish becomes a highly interactive, personable, and rewarding centerpiece fish for advanced marine aquariums.
