Sailfin / Algae Blenny
The Sailfin / Algae Blenny is an energetic, algae-eating marine fish perfect for reef tanks due to its natural grazing behavior. Typically reaching 4–6 inches, it requires a 50+ gallon aquarium with plenty of rocks and open swimming space, as it spends most of its time browsing for algae. This species thrives in stable saltwater conditions with temperatures of 75–82°F, a pH of 8.1–8.4, and salinity around 1.023–1.025. While generally peaceful, it can be territorial toward other herbivorous fish, so multiple hides and rock coverage help reduce aggression. Its diet should focus on naturally occurring algae, but can be supplemented with spirulina sheets, blanched vegetables, and herbivore pellets. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are essential, and care should be taken when introducing it to reef tanks with small invertebrates, as it may nip at delicate corals. With proper care, the Sailfin / Algae Blenny is an active, reef-safe cleaner that provides both functional algae control and entertaining behavior.
