Quality Marine is a staunch supporter of aquaculture initiatives, both domestically and internationally, seeking to enhance species’ availability. QM Labs is Quality Marine’s aquaculture labs in Los Angeles, California. This facility operates using state-of-the-art, sterile conditions and on-site production of live food to aquaculture a variety of demersal and pelagic species. A core attribute of our mission is to augment wild collections with aquacultured specimens, ensuring a consistent supply of sustainable livestock for our valued store partners. This approach addresses challenges such as seasonal variability and disruptions caused by a myriad of events that can limit the availability of wild-harvested fish.

At QM Labs, overcoming several logistical and technical challenges has been essential for successful aquaculture. Initial efforts included establishing a phytoplankton lab for large-scale algae production, followed by the complicated cultivation of copepods, which are crucial for young fish diets. After years of success with spawning and rearing on a commercial scale of species such as Clownfish, Gobies, Dottyback, Jellyfish, Nudibranches and Blennies, as well as the pelagic species like the Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum). These fish are sourced from the Red Sea and are known for its vibrantly contrasting colors. By cultivating Purple Tangs year-round, Quality Marine can provide varied sizes to meet market demand while addressing seasonal collection challenges.

Aquacultured fish, such as the Purple Tang, generally adapt more readily to home aquariums compared to their wild-caught counterparts. Raised in controlled environments with human interaction and prepared diets, these fish acclimate quickly and are ready to eat commercial food formulations with minimal adjustment time. Quality Marine carefully monitors the health and dietary needs of these fish as they develop, focusing on high-quality nutrition from the earliest stages and shifting from copepods to enriched rotifers and eventually to frozen and Nutramar dry foods.

Looking ahead, Quality Marine aims to broaden our QM Labs aquaculture facility's capabilities by optimizing production techniques and exploring the cultivation of new species that have not previously been commercially viable. This commitment to innovation will enhance the variety and sustainability of available marine specimens, and complement the supply of wild-harvested fish for their retail partners. Quality Marine's continuous efforts in aquaculture not only support environmental sustainability but also foster strong relationships with responsible fishermen worldwide.
