Mekong River Pufferfish
The Mekong River Pufferfish is a fascinating freshwater puffer native to the Mekong River basin of Southeast Asia. This intelligent and inquisitive species thrives in well-maintained aquariums of at least 30 gallons with excellent filtration, stable water quality, and plenty of driftwood, rocks, and plants that provide visual barriers and enrichment. Ideal water conditions include temperatures between 75–82°F, a pH of 6.8–7.8, and moderate water flow. As a carnivore, the Mekong River Puffer requires a varied diet of hard-shelled foods such as snails, shrimp, mussels, and other meaty invertebrates to help naturally wear down its continuously growing teeth. While often less aggressive than some larger puffer species, it can still be territorial and may nip the fins of tankmates, making species-only setups or carefully selected companions the best option. With proper nutrition, enrichment, and pristine water conditions, the Mekong River Pufferfish becomes an engaging, personable, and highly rewarding centerpiece fish for experienced freshwater aquarists.
