Kohaku Discus
The Kohaku Discus is a breathtaking selectively bred discus variety inspired by the classic Kohaku koi pattern, featuring a brilliant white body accented with vibrant red or orange markings. Its elegant coloration and graceful swimming make it a prized centerpiece in freshwater aquariums. Like all discus, Kohaku Discus require pristine water quality, stable conditions, and a peaceful environment to thrive. They are social fish that should be kept in groups of at least 5–6 individuals, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural schooling behavior. A 75-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended for a small group, with excellent filtration and regular water changes to maintain exceptional water quality. Kohaku Discus prefer warm, soft, slightly acidic water with temperatures of 82–86°F, a pH of 6.0–7.0, and low nitrate levels. A planted aquarium with driftwood, open swimming areas, and subdued lighting provides an ideal environment. Suitable tank mates include peaceful species that tolerate high temperatures, such as cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, Corydoras catfish (heat-tolerant species), and peaceful dwarf cichlids. As omnivores with a strong preference for protein-rich foods, Kohaku Discus should be fed a varied diet of premium discus pellets, Gamma frozen bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, blackworms, and high-quality beef heart blends in moderation. Offering several small meals throughout the day helps support healthy growth, vibrant coloration, and robust immune function. With excellent husbandry and stable conditions, Kohaku Discus can live 10–15 years, rewarding aquarists with their beauty, intelligence, and engaging behavior.
