Giant Chocolate Gourami

The Giant Chocolate Gourami is fascinating freshwater labyrinth fish native to the blackwater streams and peat-swamp habitats of Borneo. Despite its name, it is not truly a giant gourami, reaching roughly 5–6 inches (13–15 cm), and is recognized for its rich chocolate-brown coloration, subtle patterning, and graceful swimming style. This species is best suited to experienced aquarists because it prefers soft, acidic, tannin-rich water and can be sensitive to sudden changes in water quality. A 40-gallon aquarium or larger is recommended, decorated with driftwood, leaf litter, dense plants, floating vegetation, and subdued lighting to recreate its natural environment. Temperatures around 78–84°F, a pH of approximately 4.5–6.5, and very soft water are ideal. Giant Chocolate Gouramis are peaceful but can be shy and should be housed with similarly calm blackwater species. They are omnivorous with a strong preference for small meaty foods, including bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and other small crustaceans, supplemented with quality soft pellets or flakes. Frequent small feedings and excellent water quality are important, particularly during acclimation. With the proper specialized environment and attentive care, this uncommon gourami can be a remarkable centerpiece for a naturalistic blackwater aquarium.
