Big Spots Crenastus Borneo Sucker Loach

The Big Spots Crenastus Borneo Sucker Loach is a fascinating freshwater hillstream loach native to the fast-flowing streams of Borneo. It is recognized by its flattened body, bold spotted pattern, and specialized fins that allow it to cling tightly to rocks in strong currents. This peaceful species thrives in a mature, river-style aquarium of 20 gallons or larger with smooth stones, driftwood, a sandy substrate, strong water movement, and excellent oxygenation. Ideal conditions include temperatures of 68–76°F, a pH of 6.5–7.8, and pristine water quality with low nitrates. Big Spots Crenastus Borneo Sucker Loaches are social and do best in small groups, making them excellent companions for other peaceful stream fish such as small danios, rasboras, shrimp, and other hillstream loaches. As primarily algae and biofilm grazers, they require a mature aquarium with established growth on rocks and surfaces, supplemented with spirulina-based foods, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional small frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp or daphnia. With proper care, a high-flow environment, and a consistent food supply, this unique loach can live 5–8 years, providing constant activity and natural grazing behavior in a well-designed freshwater stream aquarium.
