The Redstriped Balloon Surinamensis Eartheater is a relatively peaceful, substrate-sifting cichlid that thrives in a spacious, well-maintained freshwater aquarium. It requires a soft sandy substrate to support its natural feeding behavior of sifting and expelling sand through its gills, along with clean, well-oxygenated water and stable parameters. Provide plenty of open swimming space with some rocks or driftwood for structure, but avoid sharp decor. This omnivorous species does best on a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live foods. While generally community-friendly for a cichlid, it should be housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates, as it can be stressed by overly aggressive species. Regular water changes are essential to maintain its health, especially due to its constant interaction with the substrate.
