(MENAFN - Asia Times) The Aquatic Rainbow Technology Park, India's first ultra-modern facility for breeding ornamental fish, will open in Chennai within the next three months.

According to reports, the Fisheries College and Research Institute in Ponneri, Tamil Nadu, which is the second-largest exporter of ornamental fish after West Bengal, is developing the facility, which is expected to facilitate the mass production of high-value aquarium fish.It will beequipped with a multi-species hatchery and live feed culture units.

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), a nodal agency of the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry, is a member of the steering committee for the project.

According to A Jayathilak, MPEDA's chairman, the facility will feature advanced infrastructure and be staffed by people with the technical expertise to boost the production of both indigenous and exoticornamental fish species. It is also expected to develop breeding technologies for high-value indigenous ornamental fish species and ensure that quality fish seeds (fertilized fish eggs) are produced in bulk quantities, he added.

The other aims of the project include the development of new technologies to facilitate an uninterrupted supply of live feeds as well as advanced disease diagnosis and treatment.

The state government's Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives is funding this Rs10 crore (US1.6 million) facility.
