Bob's Picks

I was doing my daily walk through (actually one of many) the hatchery today and was appreciating the diversity. There are so many different variations of the same species depending on area of collection its mind boggling. The thing is that many of these variations are ever so slight. Until you see the species side by side you cant truly appreciate the difference. These variations are the most evident in Short Supply Chain (SSC) animals, which is another one of the benefits of utilizing them.

Obviously, we put a lot of energy and resources into utilizing SSCs and ultimately its because they produce the highest quality specimens with the least amount of time from point of collection to point of export. A one day roundtrip boat ride is much preferable to a 5 day journey just to get to the collecting area. Nutrition is also an extremely important factor in the success or failure of any species, but one that can be often underemphasized. Less time spent in transit means we can get a good captive feeding response going much sooner. The essence of a SSC is not advantageous pricing, its based on better and less handling of the animals involved.

And on that note I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July Holiday!

We just got in a limited number of MAC Pink Skunk Clownfish (Amphiprion perideraion) from our Short Suppy Chain in Fiji. This is a great example of what I was talking about earlier as these "pink" skunks really have that beautiful orange coloration, which is just not found in other locations.

Also from that SSC supplier we have an excellent stock of Auriga butterflies (Chaetodon auriga). These have a different coloration that those found in the Red Sea, tending to keep their "eyespot" longer into adulthood.

We have just a couple HUGE Pearly White Anglerfish (Antennarius sp.) left. These are inhaling silversides out of our husbandry team's hands. If you were ever worried about getting that big angler on a prepared diet, then this is the one for you.

We also have an oustanding selection of Passer Angels (Holacanthus passer) in house. We have everything from a single gorgeous full adult through changing and juvenile colorations. Just pick the size and color you are looking for!

After not seeing them for a very long time, we have some Pederson's cleaner shrimp (Periclimenes pedersoni) in stock. These are a very unique little cleaner shrimp found frequently hosting in Condylactis anemones (Condylactis sp.). Luckily we have some of those in stock as well.
