Photo of the Week - Halichoeres ornatissimus

Halichoeres ornatissimus goes by many common names and is frequently called the Checkerboard, or Red Scribbled Wrasse. Identifying it is made no less confusing by the number of similar species and subspecies that aren't described yet. There is a good possibility that this is one of those subspecies. Because this fish sports an "eye spot" on its dorsal fin into adulthood and even in most males, there is a possibility that it may be described as a new species. For now, we have just called it a localized color form of H. ornatissimus.
