Photo of the Week - Dendronephthya

Dendronephthya go by a number of common names, The Carnation Tree Coral, Cauliflower Soft Coral, or Strawberry Soft Coral. They are both notoriously peaceful and notably difficult to keep. We suggest species specific tanks, as these corals require heavy phytoplankton feedings and are somewhat more tolerant of nutrients than your average aquarium animals. These are not photosynthetic, and can be kept in near total darkness, but most have no problems being exposed to light, even if it is quite bright, which can better showcase their outstanding colorations. Gentle random currents and peaceful, nutrient tolerant tankmates are suggested. Handle with care, while their nematocysts are weak, their spines tend to irritate.
